In April 2022, Galen visited his favorite restaurant, Slim Chickens, to enjoy his usual order of fried chicken and a Cherry Coke. While placing his order, he started up a conversation with Lynn, the general manager. He expressed his love for Slim Chickens and how it would be a dream of his to work there. His enthusiasm led to an interview which led to employment. Recently, Galen’s hard work and dedication were recognized when he was awarded employee of the month at Slim Chickens.

Boone County Family Resource’s Individual Placement and Support (IPS) program provided Galen with essential support to maintain and thrive at his job. Galen’s IPS team included support staff from the agency’s Life & Work Connections team, the Family & Community Living Support team and from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Community Employment Specialist Kaitlynn Rhinehart said, “Galen started his job the same month he joined our team. He received a lot of support from a community skills specialist who helped him with interview training, obtaining work-appropriate clothing, securing a food handler’s permit and wage reporting.”

Galen’s work routine includes the preparation and portioning of sauces, prepping meal boxes, maintaining cleanliness and window cleaning. His manager shared that he is always demonstrating his versatility, flexibility, and willingness to assist, even on the weekends.

“I am willing to help. If I get sent home early, I am willing to come in to make up some time on weekends,” said Galen. “I got it (the award) by being on time, being reliable and doing what I am asked to do.”

Galen expressed that this is his favorite job among all his professional experiences. Not only is he positively impacting Slim Chickens, but he is also a valued and cherished member of the Slim Chickens team.
