Robert Finds Peace and a Fresh Start at Oak Towers

August 19, 2025

After years of managing a home that had become a source of stress, Robert is celebrating a new beginning filled with comfort, security and a fresh sense of community. Since moving into his new apartment at Oak Towers, he says he is “starting myself all over again.”

Robert’s old house, which he inherited, had become a significant burden. With no heat or running water, and an endless stream of bills, the house was no longer a safe or comfortable place to live.

Robert enjoys the natural light in the kitchen at his Oak Towers apartment.

“I just couldn’t deal with it anymore,” Robert shared. “No heat, no water, too many bills.”

Moving to Oak Towers has been life-changing. Robert now enjoys the safety of 24-hour security, consistent hot and cold water, and a spacious apartment with a large bedroom, full kitchen and plenty of natural light.

“Since I’ve been here, everybody says I’ve changed a whole lot,” he said. “This is better than the house. I’ve got a lot of friends here.”

Robert’s transition was made easier with support from Boone County Family Resources Support Coordinator Tyus Leslie. Tyus helped him secure housing and referred him to the Department of Health and Senior Services for a caregiver. The caregiver assists with laundry, shopping and errands — tasks that had become challenging, especially when relying solely on public transportation.

Tyus also connected Robert to additional supports, including the Voluntary Action Center’s (VAC) fan and holiday gift programs. He provided Robert with guidance in setting up a MO ABLE account to enable him to safely deposit proceeds from the sale of his house while maintaining eligibility for government benefits.

“I try to support Robert however I can,” said Tyus. “Even if it’s just the little things that help him get around.”

With his basic needs now met, Robert has been able to focus on personal goals: buying a new watch, updating his wardrobe, getting a fresh haircut and making plans to furnish his new home.
Grateful for the help he’s received, Robert praised Tyus’ support.

“This guy here, he’s helping me out a lot,” Robert said. “If I need something, I send him a message and he gets back to me.”

For Robert, his apartment at Oak Towers isn’t just a new place to live—it represents a new lease on life. “I ain’t going nowhere else,” he said with a smile.
