Get Out and About This Summer

There are some great options available in Boone County and beyond! BCFR Support Coordinators can help research and find the best option for people of all ages interested in attending a summer camp. Here is just a sampling of the

many opportunities available in our area:

Summer School

Columbia Public Schools offers several summer school opportunities including several tuition-free programs for school-aged children. The programs run from June 4 – 28, 2018. Age groups vary depending on the program.

Fun City Youth Academy offers Fun City Summer Academy which provides an eight-week summer program for kids entering grades 1-5. The goal of the program is to combat “summer fade” by helping students retain their skills during summer break. The program runs from June 4 – July 27, 2018.

Day Camps

Access Arts offers six weeks of week-long day camps for school-age children 5 and up starting July 2, 2018. Each week has a different art-related theme. Additionally, two half-day adaptive sessions area available the weeks July 9-13 and July 16-20, 2018.

Giving Song offers a seven session Creative Arts Summer Camp for children in age groups 7-12 and 13-15 starting June 18, 2018. Each week has a different theme such as friendship, health and wellness, emotions – and revolve around music, art and movement interventions. The final session showcases skills learned in previous sessions.

City of Columbia Parks & Recreation department offers a week-long adapted summer day camp for individuals ages 16 and older starting June 15, 2018. The camp will include daily recreational and art activities along with bowling, swimming, a movie trip and more. TRYPS Theatre Institute at Stephens College also offers six weeks of week-long day camps open to rising Kindergartners through grade 7 starting July 9, 2018. Kids are split into groups by age and rotate between classes including music, acting, dance, visual arts, theater games and more.

Summer Overnight Camps

There are several summer camp options for individuals of all ages with disabilities living in Missouri. Some camps are specific to certain conditions such a limb difference or spina bifida, and there are camps related to special interests like sports or horseback riding.

Sports-related Camps

Disabled Athlete Sports Association (DASA) offers Camp WeCanDu for kids ages 6-16 years the week of June 17-22, 2018 at Babler State Park in Wildwood, MO. Overnight and day camp opportunities are available. Campers experience new athletic and sensory opportunities each day.

iCan Bike is a week-long program that gives people with disabilities the experience of independently riding a conventional two-wheel bicycle. Open to ages 8 and up the week of June 18-22, 2018 in Fulton, Missouri.

The City of Columbia Parks & Recreation Department offers a financial assistance program to youth ages 2-17 to participate in Parks & Recreation related activities such as Adapted Community Recreation and sports programming.
