Achieving His Goals

November 8, 2013

LeRaun“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” – Henry David Thoreau.

LeRaun is a man on a mission. After training this past year on the Boone County Family Resources Janitorial Crew as well as participating in the Life & Work Connections Transition Network classes, he was recently hired to work part-time at Hy-Vee in the kitchen area. With a big smile on his face, he said he was very excited about this new chapter in his life. “I’m ready!”

LeRaun graduated from Rock Bridge High School in 2008 and held a couple of different jobs, but reported not being very happy with the work that he was doing. LeRaun and his support team agreed that additional vocational training would beneficial before seeking additional employment.

Through training on the BCFR Janitorial Crew, LeRaun developed better workplace communication skills as well as responsibility, dependability, teamwork and initiative. His trainings helped prepare LeRaun for community employment and develop the skills necessary to secure and maintain a job. Additionally, by participating in the “Professional Development” class through the Transition Network program, LeRaun practiced his interview questions and learned how to find a better job. He reported the class “helped him a lot.”

To supplement the coursework and trainings, this summer, LeRaun began working directly with Jamie Short, a community skills specialist at BCFR, to create a resume and search for meaningful employment. “When I started working with LeRaun in July, it was very clear that he was excited and ready to get a job,” said Jamie. “From day one, LeRaun knew that he either wanted to work with horses, in a store such as Hy-Vee, or with cars.  He has been very committed to achieving these goals.”
LeRaun completed his training with the Janitorial Crew in September and also began volunteering at Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center. “This month has been very exciting for LeRaun, because he fulfilled two of his goals,” said Jamie. “It has been an honor to get to take part in LeRaun’s journey in finding employment and I am so proud and excited for him.”

That excitement definitely shows on his face. Good luck, LeRaun!
