Disability Rights Legislative Day 2025

May 20, 2025

On February 26, staff and individuals served from Supported Living traveled to Jefferson City to participate in Disability Rights Legislative Day (DRLD), joining other advocates in pushing for meaningful change. It was an opportunity to engage with legislators, share their perspectives and connect with others who are passionate about disability rights.

Louise speaks with Rep. John Martin’s legislative assistant, Christine Bell, requesting that no changes are made to Medicaid and food stamps. She was accompanied by her friends and fellow advocates from Supported Living—Michelle, Shawna and Robert—along with Boone County Family Resources
direct support staff members Devin Hill, Kenya Curtis and Cohen Holte.

Direct Support Professional Devin Hill shared, “I find great joy to see not only our residents, but people from all around different counties advocating for disability rights and wages for the staff that help them.”

The event kicked off with a rally featuring speakers who emphasized the importance of advocacy and policy changes to improve accessibility, services and support for people with disabilities. Following the rally, advocates had the chance to meet with lawmakers.

Director of Supported Living, Kim Milius said, “DRLD is an impactful day that individuals look forward to each year to ensure their voices are heard and unite with others from around Missouri. Self-advocacy is of utmost importance and imperative when relaying to elected officials how the legislation they are thinking of passing could affect them.”

After a long day of walking the Capitol halls, the team enjoyed an outdoor lunch in the beautiful and historic downtown, taking advantage of a rare warm and sunny February day.
