Friends of Boone County Family Resources
THE FRIENDS OF BOONE COUNTY FAMILY RESOURCES was founded in 1990 to promote the development of and provide support for Boone County Family Resources, a local agency that helps meet the challenges people with developmental disabilities and their families face every day.
The Friends are incorporated in the State of Missouri by the Secretary of State. A Board of Trustees, consisting of Boone County residents, oversees Friends’ activities.
The Friends’ resources are used in response to unique challenges and individual needs for which other suitable funding is not readily available. Donations to the Friends are tax deductible.
Each year, the Friends sponsor agency events including the Annual Holiday Party. This year over three hundred guests including the families we serve, staff, board members, community leaders, and friends were in attendance.
What is a Developmental Disability?
· a physical or mental disability *
· that happens while developing (before age 22);
· results in major difficulties with two or more of the following: walking, talking, self-care, self-direction, living independently, getting and keeping a job, learning
· is lifelong or extended duration; and requires individually planned and coordinated services and assistance
*excludes mental illness
Activities of Friends
Adaptive Equipment Donation Program
Receive and distribute donated equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, and therapy equipment to persons in need without resources through Mid-Missouri therapists and other medical professionals. Maintain the Assistive Technology Exchange Program (ATEP), an internet-based listing of available equipment, coordinated with other agencies in Mid-Missouri
Sib Shops
Sponsors workshops designed for siblings of children with special needs that provide opportunities for peer support and education
People First
Sponsors People First activities promoting self-advocacy of individuals with disabilities
Speaker Series
Sponsors educational workshops for families to learn about disability related topics such as Transition from School, Aging and Developmental Disabilities, and Estate Planning
Holiday Party
Sponsors annual party for hundreds of clients of Boone County Family Resources and their families
